Why the first 30 days matter
If you arrive in China on a Z visa (employment) or X1 visa (long-term study), your entry stamp and visa label typically assume you will convert to a residence permit soon after arrival—not remain on the entry visa alone. Rules differ by city, nationality, and employer or school, so treat every deadline as approximate until you verify with your local public security bureau exit-entry administration, visaforchina.cn, and National Immigration Administration (NIA) guidance.
This article is general information only. ChinaCopilot does not submit applications at embassies or exit-entry counters and cannot guarantee approval. We help you collect and organize documents, then hand the package to a licensed visa agent for work, study, residence, extension, or status-change cases.
Free steps you can do before any agent call
1. Confirm your actual category and clock
- Read your visa sticker: Z (work), X1 (study over 180 days), or another stay category if applicable.
- Note entry date, allowed stay duration on the stamp, and any notes on the visa.
- Ask your employer HR or international office which local exit-entry office handles foreigners in your district—do not rely on blog posts alone.
2. Complete accommodation registration (住宿登记)
Within 24 hours of moving in (rule often cited; confirm locally), register where you live:
- Hotel: registration is usually done at check-in.
- Apartment or shared flat: register at the local police station or via your landlord’s community office, depending on city practice.
Keep the registration slip or online confirmation. You will almost always need it for a residence permit. If registration fails because the address is wrong on the lease, fix the lease or address first—see our troubleshoot tips for common registration blockers.
3. Work track (Z): align employer documents first
For employment stays, the work permit (or notification letter, depending on current policy for your case) and employment contract must match what the exit-entry office expects. Before you queue:
- Get a written timeline from HR: medical exam, work permit card, social insurance registration if required, and residence permit appointment.
- Collect company license copies, invitation or employment verification, and your passport—HR often holds templates; you still verify the list against the local office handout.
- Complete a designated health examination for foreigners if your city requires it for work permits (hospital list is city-specific).
Talent tiers (A/B/C) and unified work-permit reforms may change which forms you see; reconfirm on NIA or municipal foreign expert / HR pages.
4. Study track (X1): school letter and JW202
For X1, the school’s international student office normally drives the residence permit list:
- Admission notice, JW201/JW202 (or current equivalent), physical examination record if already done abroad or locally as required.
- On-campus or approved off-campus housing proof; some cities are strict about address consistency with registration.
- Attend orientation sessions where staff explain batch submissions—missing one document often delays the whole class.
Short X2 stays may not follow this path; if you are unsure which X category you hold, confirm with the school before assuming a residence permit applies.
5. Photos, forms, and appointment hygiene
- Prepare passport-style photos to local specs (size and background vary).
- Fill temporary residence or permanent residence application forms only from the current download on the local exit-entry site—old PDF versions are rejected often.
- Book online appointments where required; arrive with originals plus copies in the order the office publishes.
Need the Chinese address of your police station or hospital written for a taxi? Use places to show the name in Chinese on your phone.
Extensions and changes (when you are already on a permit)
If you already hold a residence permit and need extension, employer change, or study program extension, the logic is similar: updated sponsor documents, fresh registration, and forms tied to your current permit number. Stay extensions on a visa without converting to a permit follow a different lane—confirm eligibility; not every visitor can extend in country.
Visa-free entry or transit without a stay visa is a separate compliance topic. If you entered without a Z/X1 path, do not assume you can switch to work or long study inside China; that screening belongs upstream, not at the residence-permit counter.
Common mistakes that slow cases
- Registering at a friend’s address without the lawful registrant’s cooperation.
- Passport name mismatches against degree certificates or marriage certificates.
- Starting a medical exam at a non-approved clinic.
- Missing the employer’s unified social credit code on a stamped letter.
- Traveling domestically while your passport is held for processing without asking processing times.
Document packet mindset
Think in one folder per person: passport scan, registration, sponsor letters, contract or admission pack, exam results, photos, and appointment receipt. Agents move faster when nothing is missing and dates on letters are recent. ChinaCopilot’s role is to check completeness against the agent’s checklist, not to replace government decisions.
Official sources to reconfirm before you travel or sign
- Chinese visa application service: visaforchina.cn
- NIA policies and announcements (search current English pages on the official NIA site)
- Your city exit-entry administration WeChat or website for forms and hours
Immigration enforcement can be strict; compliance failures may affect future visas, as public cases in the press have illustrated. When in doubt, ask the sponsor’s legal or international staff to put requirements in writing.
