What 144-hour visa-free transit actually is

China's 144-hour visa-free transit (TWOV) is not a tourist visa. It is a short, itinerary-bound stay that lets some passport holders pass through designated ports and stay inside an allowed city cluster while traveling onward to a third country or region. The allowed airports, seaports, and city lists change. Treat anything you read online — including this page — as a field checklist, then reconfirm with your airline and the Chinese embassy/consulate for your passport before you buy the ticket.

Confirm the cluster before you fly

Typical failure mode: you land in a city that is not in the cluster printed on your itinerary, or your onward flight is on a date that exceeds the clock. Before check-in:

1. Match arrival port + stay cities + departure port to the current TWOV list.<br />2. Keep a printed or offline copy of both boarding passes (or e-tickets) that prove the third-country onward journey.<br />3. If you might visit a city outside the cluster, get a visa instead.
