Why English hotel names fail in the cab

Most Shanghai taxi drivers type your destination into Gaode (Amap) or a similar Chinese navigation app. They search by Chinese characters, district names, and official POI labels—not the English name on your booking confirmation. If your phone has no mobile data and you only have “The Bund View Hotel” in Latin letters, the driver may guess, call dispatch, or drop you at the wrong gate.

Your goal offline is simple: full-screen Chinese text the driver can read or copy into navigation, plus a landmark or cross-street when addresses are long.

Free steps while you still have Wi‑Fi

Do these before you leave the airport lounge, hotel lobby, or any place with reliable internet.

1. Lock in the official Chinese name

  • Open a Chinese map app or a trusted bilingual listing and find your exact POI (hotel, museum, hospital, train station).
  • Copy the full Chinese name and, if shown, the address line in Chinese (区, 路, 号).
  • Avoid romanization-only labels; drivers rarely search pinyin alone.

When you are online, ChinaCopilot’s free Places lookup can pull the Chinese label for many Shanghai sites so you are not guessing from an English-only PDF.

2. Save proof on your phone (works offline)

  • Take a screenshot of the map pin page with the Chinese name large and readable.
  • Save a photo of the hotel’s Chinese sign from their website or a verified listing.
  • Pin the screenshot to your gallery favorites or mark it in Photos so you can open it in airplane mode.

3. Write a “taxi line” on paper or in Notes

One line should include:

  • District (e.g. 浦东新区, 黄浦区)
  • Road + number if you have it
  • Nearest metro exit or landmark (e.g. “near 南京东路站”)

Show this line before you close the door. If the driver hesitates, point at the characters—not the English brand name.

4. Airports and major hubs (PVG / SHA / stations)

For Pudong (PVG) and Hongqiao (SHA), save the terminal or station name in Chinese plus your end address. Airport English abbreviations on a boarding pass are not enough for every driver to set navigation correctly.

For Shanghai Railway Station, Hongqiao Railway Station, and Shanghai South, use the official Chinese station name on screen; multiple “Shanghai station” phrases exist and confuse GPS search.

5. In the taxi: show, don’t explain

  • Brightness up, zoom in, Chinese characters filling the screen.
  • If you have a QR or hotel phone number in Chinese, offer it only if the driver asks; navigation still needs the place name.
  • Stay calm if they verify with dispatch— that is normal when the POI is ambiguous.

6. If maps worked yesterday but fail today

Roaming, SIM registration, and app permissions change often. For connectivity and app errors (not visa policy), skim Troubleshoot while you are on Wi‑Fi so you know the usual fixes before your next ride.

Before your trip: visa and payment rules

Entry rules, transit without a visa, and how you may pay for transport can change. Treat embassy notices, visaforchina.cn, and National Immigration Administration (NIA) pages as authoritative, and reconfirm shortly before travel—not blog summaries.

Offline backup when /places is not an option

Places is the free live lookup when you have internet. When you expect tunnels, weak roaming, or long days away from Wi‑Fi, pre-load a Shanghai taxi card: one offline HTML page with your saved destinations in Chinese, readable in the back seat without loading a map. Build and keep that card on Shanghai taxi card.
