If you are already in China and your authorized stay is running out, the first question is not “which form” but what status you hold today and what you are trying to do next—extend a short stay, renew a residence permit, or change purpose (for example from study to work). Rules differ by city, nationality, and case type. Treat this page as a practical organizer, not legal advice. Reconfirm current requirements on visaforchina.cn, your local embassy or consulate if you must apply outside China, and National Immigration Administration (NIA) guidance before you travel or submit anything.

Step 1: Know your clock and your category

Write down three dates: passport expiry, current visa or entry stamp validity, and residence permit validity if you already have one. Overstaying—even by a day—can create serious problems for future entries and in-country applications. Officials generally expect you to apply before expiry when extension or renewal is allowed; late filing is not something to assume.

Identify your lane:

 • Short stay / visitor-type visa — may qualify for a stay extension only in limited circumstances; tourism alone is often not enough.
 • Z (work) — after entry, employers usually guide you toward work permit notification and a work-type residence permit within the post-entry window your visa notes describe (confirm the exact days on your visa sticker and local PSB rules).
 • X1 (long-term study) — typically leads to a student residence permit after enrollment and health checks; X2 is short study and is a different path.
 • Residence permit holder — renewal or extension of the residence permit usually requires updated employer or school letters, accommodation proof, and photos; “extension” in conversation sometimes means renewal of the permit, not the original visa.

Visa-free entry and transit schemes are separate. They are useful for trip planning but are not a substitute for work, long study, or residence status. If you entered visa-free for tourism, do not plan paid employment in China on that basis.

Step 2: Free document checklist (works for most stay cases)

Gather scans and originals in one folder before you talk to anyone:

1. Passport — full data page; note blank pages for stickers.
2. Current visa or residence permit — both sides if applicable.
3. Latest entry stamp — arrival date and port.
4. Accommodation registration — the slip or online record from your hotel or landlord (see our free guide on foreigner accommodation registration if you are unsure whether you are registered).
5. Purpose proof — employment contract and work permit notice draft for Z; admission letter and JW202 or school documents for X1; marriage or family ties if applicable to your category.
6. Photos — often passport-style; local offices publish size rules.
7. Health examination — commonly required for first residence permits and some renewals; use an authorized clinic and keep the sealed report if instructed.
8. Employer or school authorization — stamped letters, business license copies, or unified social credit details as your sponsor requests.

Make a one-page timeline: “entered,” “permit issued,” “must apply by,” “travel planned.” Gaps in registration or a passport expiring within six months are frequent reasons cases get sent back.

Step 3: Extension vs residence permit vs status change

|Situation|Typical direction (confirm locally)|
|---|---|
|Visitor stay ending, valid humanitarian or business reason|Possible stay extension at exit-entry administration|
|Entered on Z or X1, within post-entry period|Apply for first residence permit tied to work or study|
|Permit nearing expiry, same employer or school|Renew or extend residence permit with updated letters|
|New job or different school|Change of information or new permit category—often stricter than a simple renewal|

Shanghai and other cities sometimes pilot talent or streamlined residence programs. Eligibility can change. Read the official English pages for your municipality rather than relying on forum posts.

Step 4: Work (Z) and study (X1) in plain order

Work (Z), abroad or in planning: Employer obtains work permit classification (A/B/C tiers affect documents and timing). You apply for Z visa at a Chinese visa center or embassy with the permit notification. After entry, complete medical check, residence permit application, and any social security or card integration steps your employer handles—requirements evolve; verify with HR and local exit-entry offices.

Study (X1): Secure admission, obtain school-side documents, apply for X1, enter, register with the institution, then apply for student residence permit within the window on your visa. Do not assume X1 allows indefinite stay without converting to a permit.

Neither path allows “informal” work on a tourist or visa-free stay. Compliance matters; enforcement can include permit cancellation for misrepresentation.

Step 5: Use free ChinaCopilot tools while you prep

 • Places — save addresses of exit-entry halls, authorized health centers, and your employer or campus in Chinese for taxis and maps.
 • Troubleshoot — if apps, payments, or connectivity fail while you are gathering documents in China, fix daily blockers so you can attend appointments on time.

Journey checklists on ChinaCopilot stay free; they do not replace official filing.

Step 6: When a document desk helps

ChinaCopilot is not the embassy and not the exit-entry bureau. We do not file at embassies ourselves and we do not guarantee approval. For stay-focused cases—Z work, X1 long study, stay extension, residence permit extension, and status change—the stay-visa document desk collects your papers, checks completeness against the checklist your agent needs, and hands the package to a licensed visa agent for submission. You stay responsible for truthful information and for meeting deadlines.

Before you use any paid handoff, complete the free steps above and reconfirm eligibility on official channels. If your situation is urgent (permit expires within days), prioritize an in-person consultation with local exit-entry administration or your sponsor’s immigration contact—not online guesswork.

Next step: Organize your folder, confirm dates on visaforchina.cn and NIA pages, then open the stay-visa document desk when you are ready to hand off a complete file to an agent.
