2. Turn off VPN and privacy relays for the payment attempt

Routing payments through a VPN or iCloud Private Relay often causes silent failures or endless verification. Disable those tools, force-quit the wallet app, and try one clean scan. If it fails again, stop hammering the same QR—merchants sometimes time out the code.

3. Capture proof before you retry

Screenshot the QR screen and the exact error text (English or Chinese). Ask staff to refresh the code if the timer expired. One retry with a fresh code is reasonable; repeated attempts without a new code rarely help.

4. Match the error to the fix

Different messages need different responses. Treat these as separate problems (wording varies by app version—reconfirm with your bank and the app’s latest help pages):

• Risk or verification codes (sometimes labeled WL090XL or similar) — Usually identity or device trust, not “bad Wi-Fi.” Switch to mobile data, complete any face or SMS step on official apps only, and avoid third-party “helper” APKs.
• Missing SMS or no OTP — Roaming SMS may be delayed on airport Wi-Fi. Move to LTE, check spam filters, and confirm your home number still receives international texts (carrier rules change; verify before travel).
